COURT JAILS ONYE EZE JESUS FOR SIX YEARS, SLAMS ₦20 MILLION FINE OVER HOMELAND SECURITY LAW VIOLATIONS

By Emeka Ilozor

The Anambra State High Court has convicted controversial spiritual figure Onyebuchi Okocha, widely known as Onye Eze Jesus, sentencing him to six years in prison and imposing a ₦20 million fine for offences under the Anambra Homeland Security Law.

The conviction follows the Anambra State Government’s intensified campaign against alleged ritual-related activities, fraudulent spiritual practices, and the production of charms suspected of facilitating crimes such as kidnapping, internet fraud, and other criminal offences.

Onye Eze Jesus was among several prominent native doctors and spiritual practitioners arrested during a statewide security operation launched in February 2025 as part of efforts to curb criminal activities linked to ritual practices.

In delivering the judgment, the presiding judge ruled that anyone who falsely claims supernatural abilities to enrich individuals through prohibited means or prepares charms banned under the Anambra Homeland Security Law is guilty of an offence punishable by imprisonment and substantial financial penalties.

The ruling is regarded as another major step in the state government’s ongoing enforcement of laws aimed at tackling criminality and regulating unlawful spiritual practices across Anambra State.

NKPOR RESIDENTS COMMEND GOVERNOR SOLUDO OVER IMPROVED ELECTRICITY SUPPLY

By Nkeiruka Innocent Ekeh

Residents of Nkpor in Idemili North Local Government Area have expressed appreciation to Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, following the significant improvement in electricity supply across the community in recent weeks.

About two months ago, many residents lamented prolonged power outages, saying the situation disrupted businesses, affected livelihoods, and reduced their quality of life. They appealed to the state government for intervention.

Following the improvement in electricity supply, residents say economic activities have picked up, while households now enjoy greater convenience and improved living conditions compared to the period of persistent blackout.

Speaking on the development, Mr. Ugochukwu Ekeh described the improved electricity supply as a welcome relief, noting that it has restored normalcy to his daily activities and business.

According to him, he can now preserve drinks, operate electrical appliances efficiently, and no longer depends on candles for lighting, adding that the high cost of fuel made alternative power sources unaffordable.

Mr. Ekeh commended Governor Soludo for his developmental efforts across the state, expressing gratitude for the positive impact the improved electricity supply has made on residents and business owners.

Another resident, Mrs. Uche Nicholas, said the restored power supply has enabled her family to sleep comfortably at night and preserve cooked food in the refrigerator without fear of spoilage.

Also speaking, Mr. Maxwell Ugo, a dry cleaner, said the prolonged blackout had seriously affected his business, making it difficult to earn a living. He added that steady electricity has revived his business.

Mr. Ugo prayed for the sustenance of the improved electricity supply and urged future administrations to consolidate on the developmental strides of Governor Soludo for the benefit of Anambra residents.

APGA NATIONAL CHAIRMAN SLY EZEOKENWA CELEBRATES FORMER PARTY LEADER ON 70TH BIRTHDAY, HAILS LEGACY OF SERVICE

By Mokwugwo Ogochukwu

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Barr. Sly Ezeokenwa, has paid glowing tribute to a former National Chairman of the party on the occasion of his 70th birthday, describing him as a quintessential leader whose life has been defined by selfless service, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to the growth of APGA.

In a heartfelt goodwill message released to mark the milestone, Ezeokenwa joined the celebrant’s family, friends, and associates in thanking God for what he described as a life of remarkable impact and dedicated service.

The APGA National Chairman noted that the former party leader’s 70th birthday represents more than a celebration of age, it is a recognition of a lifetime devoted to leadership, conviction, and the advancement of the people.

He acknowledged that the celebrant’s immense contributions to APGA and Nigeria’s political landscape remain worthy of appreciation, adding that his legacy continues to inspire party members and political leaders across the country.

Reflecting on their relationship, Ezeokenwa said he had come to admire not only the former chairman’s leadership qualities but also his wisdom, calm disposition, and the dignity with which he discharged his responsibilities while serving as National Chairman of APGA. He stressed that those virtues earned the elder statesman widespread respect beyond political affiliations and left an enduring impression on those privileged to work closely with him.

Offering prayers for the celebrant, Ezeokenwa asked God to grant him continued good health, renewed strength, peace, and many more years of fulfilment,  expressing hope that future generations would continue to benefit from the values and foundations he helped establish.

ONYEZE JESUS’ SENTENCING: A CLEAR MESSAGE THAT CRIMINAL IDOLATRY WILL NOT BE TOLERATED BY THE SOLUDO GOVERNMENT – MEFOR

By Rose Oranye

The Anambra State Government says the six-year jail term and “”N20 million fine handed down to Onyebuchi Okeocha, popularly known as “Onyeze Jesus”, are in line with the law and will serve as a strong deterrent to others involved in criminal and deceptive practices.

The Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr Law Mefor, stated this on Friday at the court premises, shortly after the court delivered its judgement.

Responding to questions from journalists on whether the court was “coming too hard”, Dr Mefor said the sentence reflects what is prescribed by law.

“I’m not a judiciary officer, so I can’t take a position on that. But we believe that the sentencing and the amount imposed, as prescribed by the law, and the number of years to be spent in a custodial facility — we believe that a combination of the two is quite in order,” he said.

“It will serve as a deterrent to others. They will know that the Anambra Homeland Security Law 2025 is in full force.”

Dr. Mefor described the judgement as a test of the new Anambra Homeland Security Law 2025 by the judiciary, which he said was found to be “necessary and efficacious”.

He specifically referenced Section 18, Subsection 1 of the Anambra Homeland Security Law 2025, which addresses “Okeite” and other harmful practices.

“This judgement puts a very effective conclusion to it. The commissioner warned that anyone who chooses that path will face the full consequences of the law.

He advised Ndi Anambra, especially those involved in criminal idolatry, to desist and seek legitimate means of livelihood.

“Some people are confusing our youth, making them believe that wealth without work is possible, that there is some kind of magic money somewhere. That era is over,” he said.

Dr Mefor was also quick to clarify the government’s stance on religion and traditional worship.

“Let me also use this opportunity to say that the government of Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, is not against traditional worship. What the government is against is criminal idolatry and those who hide behind religion to deceive and confuse our youths. They just have to stop. Let them look for a decent and honest way of earning a living and pursuing their happiness.”

NATIONAL HIV PREVENTION DAY: ANSACA SUSTAINS MOMENTUM IN THE FIGHT AGAINST HIV IN ANAMBRA

By Obianuju Isima

National HIV Prevention Day highlights the importance of preventing new HIV infections through regular testing, increased public awareness, safer health practices, and the elimination of stigma and discrimination. It also serves as a reminder that HIV prevention remains one of the most effective strategies for ending the epidemic.

In Anambra State, the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA) continues to lead the state’s HIV response through sustained prevention, testing, treatment and community engagement initiatives.

Under the leadership of its Executive Director and Project Manager, Dr. Nkem Okeke, ANSACA has expanded community based HIV prevention programmes by taking free testing, counselling, and health education directly to residents. Recent outreach campaigns in motor parks, markets and communities have improved access to HIV services while encouraging more people to know their status and seek appropriate care.

The agency has strengthened grassroots participation through the HIV Awareness Brigade (HAB), an initiative championed by the Wife of the Governor, Dr. Mrs. Nonye Soludo, under her Healthy Living Initiative. The programme mobilises trained volunteers across the 21 Local Government Areas(LGA) to promote HIV awareness, encourage healthy lifestyles and combat stigma at the community level.

Another major milestone is Anambra’s selection as one of the 12 states participating in the forthcoming Integrated Biological and Behavioural Surveillance Survey (IBBSS). As part of preparations for the survey, ANSACA, in collaboration with the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), the Federal Ministry of Health and the West Africa Centre for Public Health and Development, recently concluded the recruitment of field personnel. The survey is expected to generate reliable data that will strengthen evidence based HIV prevention, treatment and care programmes across Nigeria.

These achievements reflect the commitment of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, to strengthening Anambra’s healthcare system through strategic investments, partnerships and evidence based public health interventions. The administration’s support has continued to position the state for national health programmes that improve healthcare delivery and health outcomes.

While government and development partners continue to strengthen the HIV response, preventing new infections remains a collective responsibility. Every resident has a role to play by knowing their HIV status, seeking accurate health information, adopting safer practices and supporting people living with HIV without prejudice or discrimination.

With early diagnosis and access to treatment, people living with HIV can lead long, healthy and productive lives. Early testing helps reduce the risk of transmission and remains one of the most effective tools for controlling the epidemic.

As Anambra joins the global community in observing National HIV Prevention Day, the message is clear: HIV prevention begins with each of us. Through sustained awareness, expanded access to prevention services and communities free from stigma, Anambra can continue making significant progress towards ending HIV as a public health threat.

A PRESIDENT, A GOVERNOR, AND TWO NEW ROADS FOR SOUTHEAST DEVELOPMENT

By Christian ABURIME

There are moments in the life of a nation when policy stops being a promissory note and becomes a promise kept. Politics ceases to be a barrier and gives way to collective progress. This week has delivered one of those moments for the South East, as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, approved two significant, game-changing road projects that will transform commerce, mobility, and developmental hope across a region long defined by its resilience.

The good news rightly struck an exultant, patriotic chord in the heart of Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, who gushed with deserving plaudits for the president. On July 1 this year, Governor Soludo met with President Tinubu on the road projects. Within twenty-four hours, the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, had reached out for the specific details of the roads under discussion. Two days later, the Governor forwarded the technical particulars.

On July 15, the president’s approval was granted for two critical roads to proceed to design and procurement: the 108-kilometre Otuocha-Anam-Abaji (Kogi) road, and the 150-kilometre Oba-Nnewi-Uga-Ihube (Okigwe Junction) road, which links Anambra and Imo States to the Enugu-Port Harcourt corridor by way of Abia State. Both roads are to be dualised, a scale of ambition that speaks to the seriousness with which the federal administration now approaches Southeast infrastructure.

What stands out most in this great development is beyond the engineering scope of the two roads: the process that produced them. Barely two weeks separated the initial conversation from final approval. That is the rhythm of a leader who listens genuinely, promptly, and without the bureaucratic friction that has too often characterised the relationship between Abuja and the Southeast. President Tinubu’s swift response to a request rooted in the everyday needs of ordinary Igbo traders, farmers, students, professionals, and travellers is a quiet but poignant demonstration of democratic responsiveness: governance that moves at the speed of the people’s need, not the convenience of politics or the calendar.

It is also, notably, governance without discrimination. These are not roads that serve one party’s political base or reward one geopolitical zone over another. They connect Anambra to Kogi in the North Central, and Anambra and Imo to Enugu, Port Harcourt, and Abia, a web of connectivity that touches the Southeast, the South-South, and the North Central all at once. In approving them, President Tinubu has once again shown that his commitment to national development is not partitioned by region, party, or any political grievance. The man fondly called ‘Ashiwaju’ is living up to his name, a true leader who carries everyone along with the roads that will carry the Southeast into its next chapter of growth.

For a region whose historical relationship with the federal centre has often been shadowed by the unhealed wounds of the civil war, infrastructure carries a meaning that goes beyond asphalt and concrete. Every dualised road is also a statement: that the Southeast belongs fully within the national project, that its people’s daily struggles with poor connectivity matter to those who preside from the centre, and that reconciliation is possible when it is backed by concrete, measurable action.

Equally instructive is the role that Governor Soludo, kindly supported by Works Minister Dave Umahi, has played in bringing this milestone to life. Neither of the two approved roads runs exclusively within Anambra State. In championing both, Governor Soludo has once again demonstrated that his vision for development extends beyond the boundaries of the state he governs, to the wider Southeast and its immediate neighbours.

That is the mark of true regional leadership: the willingness to advocate for infrastructure that benefits one’s neighbours as much as one’s own constituents, understanding that the prosperity of Anambra is inseparable from the prosperity of Imo, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi and the wider corridor that binds the East together. Thus, Governor Soludo has consistently shown that he is not only an administrator of Anambra’s affairs, but as a builder for the entire Southeast, a role he has embraced with the same technocratic rigour that has defined his tenure so far.

Just as significant is the strategic and non-partisan alliance the Governor has always built with the federal government to make this possible. In his own words, this is “why politics makes sense” to him: collaborative engagement with the ruling administration in Abuja, in service of concrete outcomes for the people, rather than partisan posturing that yields nothing. It is a model of progressive governance: one that measures success not in political point-scoring but in kilometres of road delivered to collective progress.

Taken together, the approval of these two critical roads is a proof of what is possible when progressive leaders work together. It is a sign of greater things to come. As design and procurement now move forward on the Otuocha-Anam-Abaji and Oba-Nnewi-Uga-Ihube roads, the Southeast can look ahead with renewed optimism. History, as Governor Soludo noted, will indeed be kind to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a leader who choose to build rather than only promise.

ANAMBRA GOVERNMENT TO DEVELOP COMPENSATION FRAMEWORK FOR PROPERTY OWNERS AFFECTED BY POWER TRANSMISSION PROJECT

By Chukwuka Ugokwe

The Anambra State Government says it is developing a framework to facilitate compensation for property owners whose buildings and lands will be affected by the establishment of the right-of-way for a proposed 132KV electricity transmission line project.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Barr. Chijioke Ojukwu, disclosed this while briefing journalists in his office on July 15, assuring affected property owners that the government would ensure a transparent and fair compensation process.

The proposed transmission line, an initiative of the Federal Government through the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), will pass through Nnobi, Awka-Etiti and Nnewi communities, expecting to strengthen electricity supply in Nnewi and neighbouring communities while supporting economic growth across the state.

According to Ojukwu, the government has completed the identification and marking of the right-of-way and will soon invite affected property owners for documentation and verification of their claims.

He explained that the process would include the collation of relevant documents, determination of compensation where applicable, and the publication of an official gazette revoking affected properties in line with legal requirements.

“Where public infrastructure requires private land, overriding public interest takes precedence. We have identified and marked the right-of-way, and affected property owners will be invited for documentation. Government will work out the modalities for compensation and the conditions under which it will be paid,” he said.

The commissioner noted that the completion of the transmission project would significantly improve power supply, stimulate industrial activities and reinforce Anambra’s position as a major commercial and manufacturing hub.

He appealed to affected residents and other stakeholders to cooperate with the government, expressing confidence that the Soludo administration would handle the process with fairness and due consideration for those affected.

Ojukwu reiterated the state’s commitment to delivering critical infrastructure projects that will enhance economic development and improve the quality of life of residents across Anambra State.
