Awka, Feb. 20, 2018 -- Work is in the final stages to officially launch Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme (ASHIS), in order to improve the quality of healthcare services to Ndi Anambra.

The Executive Secretary ASHIS, Mr Emmanuel Eze said this during media interaction at the state Ministry of Health.

The secretary said that Gov. Willie Obiano inaugurated the Governing Council of Anambra Health Insurance Agency on Sept. 9, 2017 to work toward selection of hospitals, laboratories and other facilities for the scheme.

``This is to ensure that necessary tools needed for smooth running of the scheme are in place to address health challenges in the state as well as to make health services affordable and accessible to people.

``The benefit of the scheme is so enormous that those who will embrace it will have access to doctors and good facilities when ill.’’

Eze emphasised: ``once they pay their premium, which will be as low as N30 per day, covers in-patient and out-patient services.

``This means that illnesses like malaria, typhoid fever, intermediate and minor surgeries, eye problems will be covered under this scheme.’’

He, however, added that pregnant women would be taken care of right from conception to delivery.

The secretary noted that liaison offices would be in all the Local Government Areas (LGA), where people could go and obtain their cards and have access to accredited hospitals of their choice.

He applauded Gov. Obiano for setting aside N200 million for commencement of the scheme.

The scheme had been signed into Law. The 13-member Governing council has Dr Philip Umezoke as Chairman.
