LAWMAKERS COMMEND GOVERNMENT OVER ASSESSMENT VISIT TO NNEWI CHURCH FIRE
By Anastacia Agunwa :
Awka, Nov. 20, 2019 (MOI) Anambra State House of Assembly has commended Gov. Willie Obiano over an on-the-spot assessment visit at a fire incident that claimed the life of Rev Fr Edmund Nwagbara at Nnewi.
The incident occurred at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Nnewichi, Nnewi North Local Government Area (LGA).
Lawmakers urged Anambra Government to prevail on the police as an agency to do the needful to identify the cause of the fire.
This followed a motion for adjournment of plenary moved by Mr Nonso Okafor representing Nnewi North Constituency on Nov. 19.
He noted that there was more to the fire, saying that late Fr. Nwagbara was an exceptional Parish Priest that had offered scholarships to people and helping the needy.
According to Okafor, when the incident happened, our community was thrown into confusion because of Fr Nwagbara’s death.
``He was an exceptional being. As a representative of the people, I plead with Gov. Obiano to prevail on police to find out the cause of the fire,’’ he said.
The Speaker, Mr Uchenna Okafor who presided over plenary, described the incident as `shocking’.
He urged the legislators as well as staff members to intensify efforts at providing Ndi Anambra, the best at all times as the House would reconvene soon after a 3-week recess.
``It is a fruitful break in view of engaging activities embarked upon by the legislators such as oversight of government organs and personal constituency projects/empowerment schemes.
``Reports from various constituencies across the state are full of commendations to the state lawmakers for their sense of inclusiveness and commitment to the welfare of constituents.
``We shall also ensure effective representation and enactment of laws aimed at improving the living standards of Ndi Anambra as well as the development of the state.
``Let unity, peace and brotherliness that are among the attributes of the 7th State Assembly will continue to thrive to the benefit of Ndi Anambra,’’ Okafor said.
The House expressed joy at the manner that Gov. Obiano moved to the venue in company of the Anambra Police Commissioner, Department of Security Service (DSS) and Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese for on- the-spot assessment.
They urged the governor to install security network in Nnewi to fish out culprits behind the Church fire.
The legislators, however, observed a minute silence in honour of late Fr. Nwagbara.
